The Cropper Foundation did not join the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment ref because it was big and important. We got on board for the same reasons we choose our other partners: from the details of their working structure to the overall goals of sustainability and ecosystem understanding – especially with regard to the human element – the heart of their work resonates with ours.
Almost from the Foundation’s start, our relationship with the Assessment has been among the most significant and influential ones. There are many references to it in our story. The assessments of the Northern Range and the Caribbean Sea fall under their banner. From 2001, Angela Cropper served as co-chair of the Scientific Panel. Foundation staff members, Keisha Garcia and Sarika Maharaj, as well as Board member, John Agard, were lead authors on the final document.
Our projects have benefitted from their material and intellectual support. In turn, we have been able to contribute our specific knowledge and understanding of
our ecosystems – local to regional – and their challenges and needs.
With its potential impact on an international community, our links with the assessment have given us the opportunity to participate in activities well beyond
what we would have been capable of as an individual organization.
